US court order: Kashmiri across divide welcome Dr Fai’s release

The Kashmiri leaders on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) welcomed the US court order for the release of Kashmiri lobbyist and Executive Director of the US-based Kashmir American Council (KAC) Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai.

“This is the victory of justice and every Kashmiri hails the decision of American court,” said Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Chaudhry Abdul Majeed while talking to The Express Tribune.

Dr Fai is the ambassador of Kashmiris right to self-determination who has sacrificed a lot for the promotion of Kashmir cause, he said.

The Federal Court Eastern Virginia in its release orders issued Friday said Dr Fai exhibited good morals during his imprisonment and he has been working for the cause of Kashmiri nation.

Dr Fai was arrested by the FBI in 2011, for not abiding by some rules of the US. He was sent to federal prison in March 2012 to serve a two year term. However, in a surprise move, a prosecutor sought cancellation of his term which was accepted by the US court.

The opposition leader in AJK Legislative Assembly Raja Farooq Haider Khan termed the release order another proof that Kashmiris are freedom fighters not terrorists. “India must learn lesson from the American court,” he said.

All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said while talking to The Express Tribune that Dr Fai’s release is proof that Kashmiris’ struggle is based on truth and India should learn lesson from the US court and withdraw its troops from Jammu and Kashmir.

Veteran Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani said Dr Fai has played a vital role in highlighting the Kashmir issue at international forums and his release is a good omen for the freedom struggle of Kashmiris.

    Dr. Fai to continue work for the cause of Kashmir during incarceration

    SAN FRANCISCO, CA. June 25, 2012 – Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, the leader of Kashmiri freedom struggle, says during his incarceration at the minimal security Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Cumberland, Maryland, he will continue his work for the cause of Kashmir.

     

    Addressing a gathering of American Muslim leadership and well-wishers in Fremont, CA, Dr Fai said there is no restriction on him to continue his work for the cause of Kashmir. He pointed out that the prosecution had withdrawn charges initially leveled against him to be the agent of a foreign government.

     

    Dr. Fai begins a two-year imprisonment term on July 10, 2012 for violating certain tax laws related to non-profit organizations. On March 30th he was sentenced to two-year imprisonment for conspiracy and violations of certain tax laws. Although initially charged under the FARA [Foreign Agents Registration Act] as an unregistered agent of Pakistan, Dr. Fai was never convicted on this allegation, which seemed clearly intended to support negotiations the U.S. and Hillary Clinton were engaged in with India at the time, according to Paul Barrow, Director of United Progressives and the Director of American Affairs for the International Council for Human Rights and Justice.

    Dr. Ayub Thakur: Friend, Colleague and Visionary Leader

     

    Dr. Muhammad Ayyub Thakur, the first of four children, was born in 1948 in Pudsoo village near Shopian, in the Pulwama district of Kashmir.

    It was 1973 when I first heard that Dr. Ayub Thakur was active in raising the awareness about the Kashmir dispute at Kashmir University and was the President of Kashmir University Research Scholar’s Association. One fine morning I went to see him along with a family friend, Jinab Aashiq Kashmiri, then the Editor of Daily Azan. We just knocked on the door at his university apartment and went in. I had never met Dr. Thakur until that time. After greeting us, he went out and in few minutes brought a cook and told him to prepare the lunch for us. We told him that we did not want to eat. It is customary in Kashmir to say that even if you are hungry. He did not listen to us and the cook prepared the lunch and we had a delicious meal.

    Poverty Eradication Should Be The Theme Of The 21st Century: Dr. Fai

    Washington, D.C. June 14, 2012. The Government of Brazil in corroboration with the United Nations is organizing “Sustainable Development Dialogue” between June 16th to 19th, 2012, prior to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20. The Rio+20 conference will be held at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil between June 20th to 22nd, 2012. Over 17,000 participants, including Heads of the State, Heads of the Government and 799 NGO’s are participating in the conference. According to the organizers, the Conference will focus on two themes: (a) a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development.

    Kashmir Dispute: A Way Forward

    The dispute over the status of Kashmir can be settled only in accordance with the will of the people which can be ascertained through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite, internationally supervised. This was the common ground taken by all the three parties to the dispute – viz.: the people of Kashmir, India and Pakistan. It was supported without any dissent by the United Nations Security Council – and prominently championed by the United States, Britain and France.
